綜合外媒報導，這起車禍發生在7月7日凌晨4時多，加州公路巡警安德森（Myles
Anderson）表示，特斯拉駕駛當時使用車道輔助、巡航控制功能，但不知道為何車輛偏離了車道，駕駛並沒有吸毒或飲酒，事故原因還在調查。

現場照片顯示，特斯拉撞向公路護欄後，車輛如串烤般被護欄貫穿，所幸不是插向駕駛座，因此駕駛只受到輕傷。警方則提醒，即便使用輔助駕駛功能，仍應該注意路況。
